This summer my husband completed his first triathlon, ¼ mile swim, 22 mile on bike and a 5k run. I am so very proud of him! It is absolutely amazing the amount of planning, training, testing and preparation for these events. Very similar to emergency management in many ways.
So I was excited to come across Disaster Relief Trials. It is a fascinating combination of people’s passions to bike and help others in disasters.
According to their site, Disaster Relief Trials is a competition format born of two missions:
1. Showcase the relevance of cargo bikes to disaster relief. Dramatically, entertainingly, authentically.
2. Stimulate the development of technique and equipment for most effective cargo bike-based relief.
This group is thinking creatively, passionately and intentionally. Partners in this race includes Amateur Radio Emergency Services, Virtual Operations Support Team, and Neighborhood Emergency Teams, along with support from emergency management, a university and an earthquake workgroup. This is thinking outside of the box using their skills and talents to address a problem.
Here is the application for those who are seeking to start in Emergency Management or advance your career. Look at how your unique interests, gifts and skills intersect with Emergency Management and disasters. This is what sets you apart from every other person. Think outside of the box when it comes to your career, because it isn’t comfortable in the box any way!
On a final note, in the next few weeks I will be finalizing a free career workbook to help you better identify your unique fit in the emergency management field. Sign up for updates on www.emerga.org and I will send your copy when complete.
